I sent this off to Cal Tech and they wrote back telling me it gave their super computer a headache. My guess is that he is your brother-in-law. Regardless, this is a fantastic portrait. The man's character comes through beautifully. And I'll bet he has a great sense of humor. You have followed the primary rule for three-quarter portraiture which forbids the nose extending past the check.

After researching this exhaustively for about a minute & a half, I discovered that there is a thing called a co-sister-in-law, which is defined as: "One's brother-in-law or sister-in-law's sister; that is, one's sibling's spouse's sister (one's sister's husband's sister or one's brother's wife's sister). " If I correctly understand your relationship as you described it, then I think you could introduce Don as your co-sister-in-law's husband. There, does that clear things up? As for this portrait, it is a fine natural-looking & intimate one & he does indeed come across as a very friendly looking fellow...

The lawful side in the UK means it stops at David, he is your brother in-law period. I don't know about other countries, but that would be it here, he'd just be a member of your in-laws family. All that aside, it is a great shot, and yeah he looks friendly.

Since you sometimes mention my piss-poor bits to you and Bill, I have to tell you, your explanation above leaves you WIDE open for bad comedy bits. Your description comes perilously close to suggesting "who's on first" (by Abbot and Costello). I'll spare you a bit on "my sister's brother-in-law's third cousin by marriage's dog" (actually I was going to say "by marriage's dog's STUFFED TOY," but why go overboard...)---because it's not funny. And if you had real cahones, you would have written---after the family connections---"I can't stand Don, neither can Bill. In fact I don't know ANYONE who can stand Don. We invite him because he's rich and we beg for money. He looks sweet in this photo? Trust me, HE'S NOT...He steals from children. He bribes dogs. Don't get me started, he's reeeeeeally an asshole..." Your description cries OUT for bad bits. But I'm letting them go... Seriously, the picture DOES show the love you have for him. The look is concentrated, intimate (esp in his slightly closed eyes, as if he's taking in or looking at someone lovingly), and beautifully angled. You're so damned good at this. And the light is soft and loving. And the way your crop cuts off of the very top of his head allows us to feel his beautiful hair all the more. It's very loving and gentle. And the black and white is quiet, filled with quiet grays, bringing home that "interior" quality again. Intimate. Beautiful portrait, Tara. (If you were waiting for me to break character and do a bit, I didn't. It's a really beautiful portrait, with no more bad bits coming.) And btw, the family connection isn't that complicated. (It's not very funny either.) I did get it. It's wonderful that you feel dearly towards people like Don who are part of family through others. A beautiful portrait.
