Or, perhaps, a monument to posterior superiority?
I have had to come back to this one several times and to think about what it means. I think now I have an inkling, I see many hands reaching out through the ground, I think each of them is an empire of the past reaching out to the light of knowledge and to the future. They are dead and gone, as all empires always have been ... they think they will last forever but, if they are lucky, the best they can be hoped for is to be discovered or remembered. We see many hands but we do not know if each is a culture or if many hands come from the same time and place. Then we have the modern group of people and some of them are reaching for the sky, and we know them as one culture because they are bound together. And some of them are reaching out, hoping their culture will live forever. But it will not be. They will be as the hands in the earth, they will be done and gone. The dead trees surely show that all the remains are skeletons.... we can still see the structures but we cannot know the life that existed. Why the single hand with the single finger. What is the meaning of this unique gesture?
Hello The single finger raised in the group symbolizes the ambition to reach higher and higher, the group of people he wanted to represent the construction of a monument by which man celebrating its capacity, which, however, has been eroded by time. There seems a certain irony and sarcasm in this render. The title says 'Human Glory' but the sky is sullen and gloomy -- a major departure from the blue skies you usually place in your renders -- besides which the trees are all withered, the landscape is barren and the countless hands seem to reach out in desperation for help. I see this as a sarcastic jab at the modern world. What so many consider the greatest achievements of humanity -- modern science, technology and the modern industrial way of life -- are in fact leading to universal ruin...
