The political borders of Vietnam fall entirely within the Tropics, between the Equator and the Tropic of Cancer, yet the distance from the South to the North is more than 1,000 miles. Roughly in the center of that distance, just north of DaNang is the Hai Van Pass. Historically, this pass has been a physical barrier to human migration patterns and influenced cultural development. But the pass is also a climatic barrier. While the climate in the Mekong Delta region stays hot and humid throughout the entire year with a summer monsoon, the area in the Tonkin region around Hanoi and Haiphong has a distinct cooler climate with monsoonal rains mostly during the winter months. These climatic differences could be seen while we traveled from south to north. In this photo the rice fields were just planted, while barely a week later, around Hue, the rice had been harvested and was spread out on large sheets around the houses for drying.
