Description
Here is an image of two Southern California landmarks, a palm tree and Canter’s Deli. The Canter family originally opened a Jewish delicatessen in Jersey City, New Jersey in 1924. They came west in the early 1940s and have been at their present location on Fairfax Avenue since 1948. Over the years it has been a hangout for Hollywood celebrities, musicians and hippies. They came for the pastrami, chicken soup and knishes.
My parents took me there when I was five years old. My mother used to tell people how I stood in the restaurant and loudly proclaimed “I want a ham sandwich!” I had lunch there this week after an absence of many years. It seems to be frozen in time. The same linoleum floors. The same tiled walls and low lighting. Even the seats appear to be the same. I don’t, however, remember the waitresses having tattoos on their arms. One thing has changed though; you can now order a ham sandwich.

Beautiful shot !!
There's nothing like going back and finding nothing has changed. Thanks for the picture and the story!
When we are young all we want is to embrace the future as fast as possible, later in life all we want is to turn back the clock. I know the feeling, going back to a place where nothing has changed, everything is familiar, and the deco you took for granted is soooooo "old school" but is a blast from the past and breaths notalgia. PERFECT POV !!!!!
Hehe! I imagine the disapproval! Any meat in bread gives me indigestion, I have to eat protein and carbohydrate at separate sittings.
Great capture and delightful story thanks for sharing
Great shot of a true LA landmark. I've had many a lunches and dinners there. So much unspoken history has gone on there. So many film & TV deals have born or sealed, apart from the artistic talent that blossomed in the Kibitz Room next door. Did you know that is where Guns 'n Roses really cut their music chops, performing and hanging out there?
Thanks for the comment. Back in the early 70s I was an underemployed new college graduate. I and the girlfriend of the moment spent many nights on Fairfax just hanging out. The Kibitz Room was also visited by The Doors, Frank Zappa and Joni Mitchel among others. You could hear the music by standing near the door or from the restaurant. When I visited Canter's I noticed the news stand on Oakwood is still there. Its got to be at least 45 years old.
Great image and great history, I I can visualize the scene, a boy asking ham and all the customers looking at him, some people angry, others horrified, and a rabbi trying not to laugh at the innocence of the child. Superb!
You have so much history in your city. At each corner. I like that. Your memories are affectionately and amusingly told... * smile * and rounded with a perfect picture. ( I would've set me to Frank Zappa * LOL *.)
