While the main focus of my creative work is speculative spaceship design, I have a love for military aircraft and their often colorful paint schemes / liveries. I also enjoy military insignia. I am particularly fond of jet fighters from the late 20th and early 21st centuries. This project presents fictional jet aircraft of a fictional humanoid society at a point in their global history similar to where humanity finds itself in the early 21st century. To create the Spoyan jet designs, I have utilized free jet models found online in SketchUp’s 3D Warehouse and modified them as needed. I tried to use speculative designs whenever possible, resorting to models of real world planes only when necessary. Thus, I am not claiming much originality in the designs. Rather, I just had fun taking existing airplane models and seeing what I could do with them. One of the major goals of this project is to portray fictional jet fighter color schemes for a variety of climates: desert, forest, high-altitude, jungle, naval, and urban. To make this task as easy as possible, I used camouflage textures found online for the majority of the liveries. I ended up with five families of color schemes: one for each of four fictional major powers and one for a global defense force they recently created to help ensure the hard-won peace they have achieved amongst themselves. The insignia I created for three of the five air forces in this project were inspired by the real-world air force insignia I like the most: that of Germany, Japan, and the former Soviet Union. The one for the global defense force was based on a world logo I found on the Internet and the fifth one was of my own devising. Viewers of the Spoyan jet fighters will immediately notice that I have left off any armament. This was a deliberate decision on my part to focus on the sculptural forms of the planes themselves. I have presented some basic statistics about each design for those interested in comparing the designs to each other and their obvious real-world counterparts. Finally, I wish to acknowledge the wonderful airplane color scheme work of two artists who can be found on www.deviantart.com: WS_CLAVE and haryopanji. It is their images that gave me the initial inspiration for doing this project.
