Description
This device was sitting outside a building that had a "Blacksmith" sign on it in Shasta State Historic Park. No explanatory signs on it, though it sort of looks like a drill press of some kind. Any other ideas?

No HDR here. I used a faded Ink Outlines filter with other minor tweaks to get this look...
Sweet shot of the old drill press! When I built steel heat treating furnaces, I used to work a similar press that took six foot long leather belts and it would tear your arm off if you tried to manually hold your work piece on the table.

It's been too long since I've come to your gallery (I miss a lot of galleries, so it's not personal to yours at all esp with your quality)...so I decided to come here, at long last. I'm just choosing images by instinct, because I like all your work a great deal. But I started with this because---well, just because. Stand out clarity on an object easily missed by many people, for starters. You brought out electricity---visual electricity, I mean---in this thing. Also because it's so stark and striking. And its fascinating structure stands out, in this presentation. Part of it is the clarity of that deep blue-black wall (which has some earth-pinks in the far right, which harmonize with the machine). Part of it is the contrast of those beautiful greens and rust peach hues (on the machine) with the wall. And part of it is the clear decay of the machine itself. I think it's beautiful. And if someone came from another civilization and had to guess what this thing was, they may not guess but they'd know it's a machine of some sort, something with very specific functions, because the distinct shapes, the presence of levers, the "drill" part suspended in air, the wheels, etc etc: They all speak of function. Fascinating, and it's composed exactly to let the machine stand out. If I were to shoot machinery, I'd hope to make something as clear and poetic as this.
