Description
Closes in Edinburgh
(Zoom is a must)
Lacking space Edinburgh was very densely build inside its city walls around its main street "The Royal Mile". To get acces to backyards as well as smaller streets there was and still are a lot of these so called "closes", a Scottish word for alley or alleyway. These are partly gate like, partly narrow openings between high buildings, and normally only for pedestrians, sometimes with stairs. They give entrance to houses and areas more far away from the main streets both for people as well as for goods and excellent shortcuts, too.
Some of the bigger closes are called "wynds", originally meant to be a passage big enough to let a carriage pass through.
These alleyways / closes are very different in outlook, length and size and I took several shots of these. Some of them are just passages, other have shops and pubs, backyards and so on, absolutely worth a visit away from the more crowded main streets.
I show some more of these with next upload.
I have this link to Wikipedia about closes:
