This is the anchor that was on the other end of that cable, along with a rope and a lead weight.

Very cool capture. If I remember correctly, the lead weight was used to determine the depth of the water beneath the craft.

Thanks for the shot Tara! A good choice. At first I thought it a bit small after seeing Bill's amazing night shot, but then realized it would be deployed from the front so once set, the aircraft would just be facing into the wind, and wind resistance is minimized. Sometimes those anchors have an additional cable attached to the other end of the anchor to enable its easier release if it gets dug in too well.
I love the way the museum has presented this so beautifully on that shiny floor. Somebody has to put them back like this every time they polish it!
Interesting. You never think of an aircraft as needing an anchor. I hope our looming government shutdown doesn't alter your travel plans too much.
