Description
The water at Ocean Beach San Francisco is freezing as the water flows south from Alaska, much to the surprise of many unwary tourists. If you are going for a dip or are surfing here you need a wet suit.
The tepid conditions did not stop this one-legged lad and his dad from enjoying a seaside romp. Seriously, he's intact, just a bit of bad timing with the shutter release on my part. Having evidently been spotted the zaney jumping quickly subsided and I got no other chance to fix this scene.

Very cool capture Roxy! I used to be stationed in the Bay Area (Alameda) and yes! that water is very cold even in the summer the coldest winter was a summer day in San Francisco
Yes, August can be freaky cold in the Bay Area for sure. The coldest summer month with all the fog.
I can well imagine that water being icy.... I've been to the PNW once when I was much younger - had an aunt that lived in Portland. We went to the beach one day, and I was jumping up and down to run barefoot into the surf... My dad, bless his ornery heart, knew what that water was like - and said 'go ahead' I stripped off my shoes, and went running - into what felt like water out of the freezer... I let out a shriek, and looked back at my dad - who was almost doubled over laughing his a$$ off.... Sure miss those days. Anyway - you caught a great candid shot, Roxy! I posted a slightly warmer beach earlier tonight.... LOL!
Having spent most of my childhood on the east coast, where the ocean is usually a very comfortable temperature during the summer, I expected the ocean in sunny California to be even warmer. But I quickly learned that the Pacific in northern California is a hell of a lot colder than the Atlantic off New York. Nice retro looking postwork that makes it look it could have come from a family photo album from the 40's or 50's...
Nice shot!
Lovely and heart-warming image, Roxy-sensei!
My kids and I did go into this water some years back but I could not go fully in as I could when younger, but they did. Later when I took them to Hawaii for the first time they asked about swimming there and I said "You already know what it will be like, after all it's the same ocean!" My daughter already knew it was warm but we kept my son worried because I said I was going to throw him in as soon as we got to the beach, and my daughter maintained the ruse. When we hit the beach, he kept well away from me until he dipped his foot into the water and finally caught on to the joke. That was fun! Nice shot Roxy!
Nice shot with a special look.
Amazing photo
beautifully caught
I love the vintage look of your shot!
Roxie, You did an outstanding job on this phone capture. That water is way too cold for me.
Marvelous image !
It is these shots are often the most valuable. Unadorned, unposed, realistic .... are my favorites. Like this one! Candid capture, Roxy
