Description
Valley of the Sun (Phoenix), West Valley. Picture taken on Litchfield Road at the South Gate to Luke AFB in a southwesterly direction.
After working out I had a little time and went to the north end of the runways to watch F-16s getting pre-flighted to take off on 21L and other F-16s flying approaches and touch and goes on 21R.
Then all the ones ready to take off taxied south to take off on 03R.
So I decided to go home when I saw these clouds. Ominous looking. When I saw those clouds i realized why the take-off pattern was changed. They would have taken off directly into this stuff. Why take unnecessary chances?
We had rain for most of the day yesterday, not the typical mosoonal thunderstorms, but rather low clouds coming in from the southeast and covering the entire sky. This was triggered by a tropical disturbance off the Baja Peninsula. Rainfall amounts in the Valley ranged from 0.35 to over 2 inches (I had 0.55 inches by noon).
This was huge - flooding at I-17 underpasses at Bell and Greeway Roads, freeway flooding on US 60 in the East Valley.
The last two years we only had 3.5-inches all year for each year in Phoenix.
Temperatures were way below normal [normal 102F (39C) hi, 79F (26C) low for 10 September]. Yesterday it was 84F (29C) and 73F (~22C).

That is some storm there brewing and that was a lot of rain you encountered seeing that Arizona is a pretty dry State. Super pic.

WONDERFUL WORK
wow nice picture and nothing like living in the desert
Amazing shot... there isn't anywhere here flat enough for long enough to get such a clear shot!!.. except maybe on the desert road!. Amazing sky colour.
enjoy the cool as it will get hot again. cool looking image
Beautiful shot! The rain came down in buckets in the far east Mesa area! I loved it! I have been cheated out of lightning this monsoon season. I hope there is a real lightshow waiting in the wings though.
I don't think there was anybody in the Phoenix area that didn't get excited about the rain. I haven't had much thunder either this year, but Litchfield Park and Avondale, and apparently South Tempe-Gilbert had some micro bursts a couple of weeks ago, and seeing the broken and/or uprooted trees, that is scrary.
@Jocko500. You are right Jock. In a couple of days we will be were we left off, 102F-103F for highs again.
@Richardphotos. Sorry Richard, this system is strictly for the southwest, no movement toward Texas!
impressive sky and colors !
better not fly into something like this when able to avoid.
That's one awesome sky !
