Description
The Imperial Harem was the private living quarters of the Sultan and his family. Many of the over 400 rooms were constructed during the reign of Suleyman the Magnificent.
The Harem was ruled by the 'Valide Sultan', the mother of the reigning sultan.
It was here that the wifes (legally up to four) and the concubines (sometimes close to 300 - though they were not all in the Harem at the same time) of the sultan, including their children and their servants, the 'Valide Sultan', along with the Black eunuchs (brought from Africa) lived.
There was no trespassing beyond the gates of the Harem, except for the sultan, the queen mother, the sultan's consorts and favorites, the princes and the concubines as well as the eunuchs guarding the Harem (Sources: Tour Guide; Lonely Planet, Turkey, 2001; Wikepedia).

Great picture. It looks like you had a fascinating trip.
Pretty fancy entrance, but I guess if you could afford all the people in your harem this would seem trivial. Nice shot! Again, no one smiling, LOL!
