Description
You're not looking at a river. This is the Deception Pass bridge, which spans the gap between Whidbey Island and Fidalgo Island in Washington State. The tide flows through this narrow gap at up to 8 knots, creating whirlpools, fast currents, and sometimes standing waves. If you're planning on taking a boat through there, make sure you know what you're doing!
We had a good time here last weekend with Lucinda (myrrhluz) and her son James.

Intimidating! Both the height of the bridge and the ferocity of the water serve to induce powerful feelings even just looking at your great photo.

fascinating contrast between nature and technique
First, I love the effect on the bridgework! The area is interesting and dangerous. We have some like it a bit north from you and one of them has three or four large towboats laying on the bottom, several hundred feet down! My former office mate who was an Olympic kayaker used to go out to these with his friends and ride the standing waves with a kayak!

Superb capture Tara. I recognized the bridge before I read your write up. What an appropriate name. I was on that bridge (in 1964 I think it was) when they towed the cage with the first captured Killer Whale through the pass. I think the whale was destined for the Seattle aquarium, but later died!

Great POV & vibrant color. This reminds me that I still have to post some photos from Skookumchuck Narrows, where the tidal current reaches 16 knots - the fastest in the Americas, though there's supposed to be one in Norway that's even faster at 20 knots...
Such a great focus (or p.o.v.?) of that bridge, with all the lines standing such right up in the landscape, Tara. I too love that lively water capture, as the color of it.
