Uniform Skirt Fashion: Individual students may attempt to subvert the system of uniforms by wearing their uniforms incorrectly or by adding prohibited elements such as large loose socks or badges. Girls may shorten their skirts, permanently or by wrapping up the top to decrease the length! The standard skirt length is around knee level, give or take a few centimeters. So, what a lot of girls do is have two skirts; one that's short for every day and for hanging out with their friends, and one for 'uniform check' day at school, or if the school is extra strict, for wearing at school. Then they'll change to the short one for when they're out of school. Student Uniform: The sailor fuku is a common style of traditional uniform worn by female high school students. It was introduced as a school uniform in 1920 in Heian Jogakuin and 1921 by the principal of Fukuoka Jo Gakuin University Elizabeth Lee. It was modelled after the uniform used by the British Royal Navy at the time, which Lee had experienced as an exchange student in the United Kingdom. There are seasonal variations for summer and winter: sleeve length and fabric are adjusted accordingly.
