Description
This small Greek Orthodox chapel is located at the foot of Philopappou Hill west of the Acropolis.
According to some sources this chapel was constructed in the 9th century AD from materials available at the Acropolis.
The name 'Loumbardhiaris' derives from the Greek word for cannon, Loumbadha. On 26 October 1656, the Turkish garrison, led by anti-Christian commander Yusul Aga, tried to cannon the Christians flocking to the church to celebrate the eve of the saint's day. Just before the attack, however, thunder struck the Turkish cannons and the commander died in this incident.
The church has one aisle, with a simple vaulted roof and preserves some Byzantine wall paintings. The exterior of the church has been changed on a number of occasions, most recently during the 1950s by the well-known architect Dimitris Pikiones (Sources: Local tour guide, Wikipedia).

B eautiful
Cool, and quaint.... one of those little treasures discovered on a trip. The cross placement is unusual..but does lead you in nicely... more inviting than the traditional vertical mounting!
