Another view of this Three Toed Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina triunguis).
This is a subspecies of the Eastern Box Turtle. The Eastern Box Turtle was hunted almost to extinction on the east coast, by native Indian tribes and early colonists who used it as a food source. Unfortunately, this turtle ate poisonous mushrooms as part of it's regular diet and this proved problematical for those who ate it because they could not deal with the poisons that had accumulated in the flesh of the turtle.

Wonderful capture but a rather sad story there. We should be protecting our threatened species and not eating them. I presume the turtle could deal with the toxins but those who were eating the poor chap got a kind of retribution from the turtle?. Do we learn?.. time does not seem to convey so.. Dodo, Great Auk etc.
