Description
These mines are some of the type of landmines that were laid during the civil war in Cambodia.
Landmines are still a major problem in Cambodia, especially in rural areas along the Thai/ Cambodian border.
This is the legacy of three decades of war which has taken a severe toll on the population. Cambodia has some 40,000 amputees, which is one of the highest rates in the world.
The landmines in Cambodia were placed by different factions (the Khmer Rouge, the Heng Samrin, and the Hon Sen regimes) that clashed during the civil war in the country in the 1970s.
It is estimated that between 4 to 6 million mines are still buried in the country today. The problem is that the people who laid the mines are either dead or can't remember where they laid the mines.
It was not unusual that on our trip across Cambodia on national highways 5 and 6 we saw several young children with missing limbs.
Any tourist contemplating leaving these highways to stray into the countryside is advised to check with locals as to the possible location of mines.
The mines shown in this picture are exhibited in the Landmine Museum located on the road to Banteay Srei temple near Siem Reap.
Even though the wars are long over, the mines still maim and kill Cambodians on a daily basis. 171 died in 2004 and 727 were injured.

eeeeeekkk !
So sad! There really has to be a way to detonate these with shock waves electronically. If Tesla was here, I am sure he could figure out how to get it done.
A great capture and a shocking sight to see. Through the years so many have stepped on them and lost limbs and even their lives.. they are quite evil.
I can't imagine living with that sort of threat everywhere. What a terrible legacy! It must have been quite an experience to visit that museum.
Candidly very terrible. Those that did not lose their lives lost limbs. The capture is excellent!
Beautiful capture !
A frightening collection. Simply frightening. These things are horribly insidious. I saw a small display one time, that included a mine that looked like a child's toy. Just a brightly-coloured bit of plastic, it appeared totally harmless. The young army engineer present explained it was designed & deployed by the Soviets in Afghanistan, with the intent of maiming children so they would not be able to fight when they grew up.
Very disturbing photo and legacy
very scary scenario and a cold reminder of the facts
Very sobering picture.
They continue to kill in many other places as well. Man's ability to kill and maim is not likely to lessen. An amazing photo!
Superb capture my friend. God bless.
Excellent and very interesting shot and informations. I saw on TV already several reports, these mines are the work of the devil.
