Description
The bridge was designed by French architect Gustave Eiffel. It spans the Red River in Hanoi and when it was completed in 1902 it was one of the longest bridges in Asia.
The bridge is now closed to Hanoi's notorious car traffic.
Because of its strategic placement in connecting Hanoi with the port city of Haiphong it was heavily bombed by American planes during the Vietnam War.
