The Dryad:
by Micha F. Lindemans
In Greek mythology, the dryads are female spirits of nature (nymphs), who preside over the groves and forests. Each one is born with a certain tree over which she watches. A dryad either lives in a tree, in which case she is called a hamadryad, or close to it. The lives of the dryads are connected with that of the trees; should the tree perish, then she dies with it. If this is caused by a mortal, the gods will punish him for that deed. The dryads themselves will also punish any thoughtless mortal who would somehow injure the trees.

Fantastic Fantasy Piece! Sensational
Love the details in this -- I almost missed the pretty little bird in the background!
Great image, even without the excellent explanation.
Cool close up.
Is that a prop mask Steve? That is cool, if it is. And if it isn't, I'm wondering how in the heck she got that over the eye like that. Don't knock simple and don't knock your portrait skills hon. This looks wonderful. It's a very apropos scene for your dryad. I wish you a very Happy Birthday tomorrow! May your own 'new year' bring you some good things...like a decent permanent job ;)

This is a great image Steve!! I never heard of Dryads before....thanks for the explanation....they seem to be such interesting characters. We have quite a few huge evergreen trees in our yard.....maybe a dryad is living amongst our trees, and guarding them....that would be nice! You did an awesome job on this image....I love it!!
