Description
Found these two Emus, at an ice cream and fruit stand near the entrance to the Everglades National Park in south Florida. The emu is the largest bird native to Australia and is the second largest extant bird in the world by height, after its relative, the ostrich. The emu is common over most of mainland Australia. The soft feathered, brown, flightless birds reach up to 6.6 feet (2 meters) in height. They have long thin necks and legs. Emus can travel great distances at a fast trot and, if necessary, can sprint at 31 mph (50 km/h). Their long legs allow them to take strides of up to 9 feet (275 cm). They are nomadic and may travel long distances to find food. They feed on a variety of plants and insects, but have been known to go for weeks without food. Emus ingest stones, glass shards and bits of metal to grind food in the digestive system. They drink infrequently, but take in copious fluids when the opportunity arises. Emus will sit in water and are also able to swim. They are curious birds who do not sleep continuously at night but in several short stints sitting down. Info from Wikapedia. Photo taken about 5 years ago, with my old Minolta.

Very cool duo of images, nice shots, Dana !
"They are nomadic and may travel long distances to find food." OK. but from Australia to Florida, for an Ice cream Cone, seems excessive.LOL. Fantastic portraits of these two birds, my friend.Details and color are great.
not the best looking birds, but also cute in a way Dana, nice photo my friend//steve
great portraits
AMAZING TWINS
Wonderfully handsome birds! Emus are among my favorites, especially since they've retained many of the physiological features of their dinosaur ancestors...right down to their often piercing, disinterested expressions. Such wonderful birds! Rather handsome specimens.
Cool emus, you should have a look at the Australian Cassowary similar to the emu, a lot more colourful and a lot more agressive.
very cool shots and even cooler information

Superb portraits of this emus, thanks for the infos!
I tried eating Emu steak once just to try and did not find it to my taste. there are many Emu ranches in East Texas that grow them to sell to restaurants these were just wild?
Well captured, dear Dana. They are funny looking birds! Hugs for all day. Di. xx
They seem so prehistoric...wonderful captures of these curious creatures!
Impressive close-ups!
nice shots of these birds. wonderful pov
Prima Fotos.
Oh, watch out they can kick like a mule from what I hear! Not surprised to hear they eat such diverse stuff to help digest their food. My brother-in-law raises turkeys and a few years ago when he dressed one off in the gizzard there were nuts, bolts, pieces of glass that were worn smooth on the edges as well as various stones. At least ice cream isn't hard to digest, LOL.
Very good capture! Thank you for the information!
