Description
This is a fresh water catfish, on display in the Gaylord Palms Convention Center tropical gardens in Kissimmee, Florida. This specimen was about 3 feet (.9 meters) long and had lost his tail maybe to an alligator. The size of adults, of this species, is about 3.9 to 5.2 feet (1.2 to 1.6 meters). They are called catfish because of the prominent barbels, around their mouth which resemble a cat's whiskers. Most catfish are bottom feeders and find food by using those barbels. Do zoom to check out the pair of barbels on each side of his face. Some info from Wikipedia.

Poor thing having a bite taken out of it! It looks most attractive on that gravel.
Is this a native American species or one of the Asian ones that they are having a lot of problems with in some states. Nice shot.

most killer capture Dana, love the zoom on the catfish.
I love to fish for catfish, but I let my husband take them off the line. :)) I do not wish to get stung. :))))) Sorry that this one lost his tail. :( Most excellent info and capture my friend. :)))) Thank you for sharing all of the beauty you see. :)))) Carry A Smile In Your Heart :))))
Very good capture!
I'm betting you were tempted to break out the rod and reel weren't ya buddy?...lol...Well it's Friday and tonight's dinner is fish!...Maybe not cat but fish none the less!...(smiles)..
Wonderful capture Dana.
I'm a catfish fan and that goes way back to my middle teen years. I have worked hard at learning how to fish specifically for catfish and have a dream of one day hooking that 20 pounder. So much of a dream it is that I have a catfish tramp-stamp in hopes it will give me good luck in catching it some day. There are 3,023 species of catfish, making them the 3rd most diverse order of vertebrates on Earth. I'm not greedy...I'll be happy with just one channel cat of 18 pounds and not quibble over the other 3,022 species and the lost 2 pounds on my goal. LOL
Excellent composition and capture Dana! :) My neighbor like them... fried! ;D
He must be able to get about ok with some of his tail gone. Lovely capture!!
Nice 'catch' mate!

Neat capture of this bottom feeder, the skin/scales looks just like blue velvet ! I wonder if there any Micefish for the Catfish to chase ? LOL Well done & ~Cheers~
Lol jif3d!But there are Dogfish. Luckily for the catfish, the dogfish is a saltwater fish! Great capture and great info Dana! All I knew about them is that they like to jump "'Twas so good to be young then, in a season of plenty, When the catfish were jumpin' as high as the sky."("Green leaves of summer" theme from "The Alamo" ,1960 by Paul Francis Webster and Dimitri Tiomkin.)
Great capture and information Dana. Lost his tail to an alligator - must have been a close call!
