Description
This is the back view of the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, or Wat Phra Kaew, officially known as Wat Phra Rattana Satsadaram. The Temple is both a sacred structure and a repository of the spirit of the Thai people. The temple is regarded as the most important Buddhist temple in Thailand.
The temple complex adjoins the Grand Palace, the seat of the Royal Thai Family.
When King Rama I (1782-1809) of Bangkok established the city of Bangkok, or Ratanakosin, as his capital in 1782 A.D., he had the Temple of the Emerald Buddha constructed in the eastern section of the Royal Palace in order to install the Emerald Buddha, which he had obtained from the city of Vientiane, Laos. The construction took two years and the famous image was transferred from Thonburi to the present site in 1784.
The Temple of the Emerald Buddha consists of numerous structures, including the ubosoth (an edifice inside a Buddhist monastery, surrounded by eight sacred boundary stones and within which the the ordination of monks and other rituals can be performed) which contains the Emerald Buddha, towers, galleries, a belfry, a figure of a seated hermit, two gilt stupa, a library, a model of Angkor Wat and other buildings and images. Wonderful temple and shot, thanks for the info :-)
I love all the architectural detail! I got totally lost in looking at this last night, but then forgot to comment. Those three towers in the center, all different styles but the same height, are fascinating. I love the rooflines of the more traditional buildings with the curvy bits on the corners, as well. This photograph just sings! I'm hooked. :)
