Description
I used to think it was strange that I would be working in both a purely digital art form, but then turn without any seeming pause and delve into working on practical effects or costuming.
Recently someone pointed out to me that I use a similar "Mental Eye" when I do either, whether it's designing a space ship model, crafting a fake claw, or a nebula. There's a design esthetic that drives my creations, and that esthetic was built in a world of sculpting my imagination both in my head and in my hands.
What most drives my work is a profound fascination with texture. My mind analyzes most of my sensory input as layers of texture, and even sounds are conceptualized as textures, so it seems natural to me that I could adapt that mindscape to any realm I enter.
When I play my drums there's overlapping rhythmic textures. When I make costumes they're built of carefully overlaid or contrasting textures. When I build a digital model of a space ship the textures wrapped around the hull of the ship define the mood and establish the design.
And here, a nebula condensing into planets and moons is defined as layers of textures, defining the place and where this will lead.

The marvel of textures is how they appear everywhere: words have textures when you write, digital thingies have textures, depending on what you want to render, tweak, manipulate, dodge, burn, or diffract. It takes quite an astute mind to recognize textures in everything from music to digital art as well in more expected places such as in traditional-media art forms. And yeah, I love the various textures in this: the condensing cloud, the planet, its moon...everything in this image. And I love the predominance of grays and silvery tones. There's a distinct mood to this and it's quite brilliant. THIS is a place I'd love to explore.
Very beautiful image. with your definitions of textures, I imagine myself, sweeping my hand (very large) through the mists and dusts with this nebula and feel it tickle my fingertips and then watch everything swirl around, settling down into a new formation and thus a new song of the spheres
Outstanding space render!
Very cool! Definitely the layers make the textures stand out.
Fantastic image, very nice work!
Great picture! And yeah, how we create things (pictures, sounds, music, objects and others), even how we are with other people reflects how we see and understand the world around us, and how we want to interact with and how we would modify it.
A wonderful space scene, and some profound thoughts on the creative process. There are some great textures here.
cool space scene, great lighting and texture
