Description
Wandering around San Francisco 25 years ago, I found the Legion of Honor Museum, up in Golden Gate Park. 'The Thinker' is a bronze and marble sculpture by Auguste Rodin (French, 1840 to 1917), whose first cast, in 1902, is now in the Musee Rodin in Paris. There are some 20 other original bronze castings, this one in 1904, that depicts a man in sober meditation battling with a powerful internal struggle. It was originally named 'The Poet' and was first conceived as a depiction of the poet Dante.
Alma de Bretteville Spreckels acquired this casting of 'The Thinker', directly from Rodin and was included in the Panama Pacific International Exposition, in San Francisco and at the close of the exposition, the monumental figure was installed in Golden Gate Park. Mrs Spreckels assembled a formidable collection of Rodin sculpture. The Thinker was one of the earliest acquisitions of the more than seventy Rodin sculptures that she purchased and later donated to the Legion of Honor. When the museum opened in 1924, 'The Thinker' was transferred from its perch in Golden Gate Park to the Legion of Honor courtyard, where it has remained an emblem of the institution ever since. Info from Wikipedia and photo recently scanned. It will zoom but it will not provide better detail.

i often find myself like this wondering what next to do on my images, cool shot my friend..
very cool however when I'm in this pose... well maybe I won't discuss it here Great capture and cool information
Nice shot of a very well known sculpture Dana!
Rodin was the sculptor who had the greatest influence on my 'work'. My favorite is The Burghers of Calais.
Excellent Dana!
Great shot Dana.
Excellent shot Dana, reminds me of a warm sunny day at Hatfield House walking around with a very young grandson who was proudly using my first digital camera, I was sitting on a stone bench in this very pose waiting for him to finish when he clicked me.
Wow, great to see him so close. xx

Cool POV and quasi silhouetting in this picture of the world renowned Thinker, Dana. I like the columned background and information also. Actually, the statue is how I look when trying to decide on which photo I'm going to post on Renderosity for that day.

Thank heavens we don't do our thinking in birthday-suits anymore ;) (well, maybe sometimes, but indoors! - anyhow, fun aside) thanks for sharing this historic little adventure with us here and the fine capture Dana, BB
What an iconic piece of work this is! I love the idea that there can be a quasi-original, perched on this side of the Atlantic Ocean! Whenever I see this, I never get the idea that the Thinker in question is dealing with some herculanean inner struggle. Ah, and--after reading your write-up--I can see this as a poet as well. Funny, I actually think that "The Poet" fits this sculpture as much as it's recognized name. Both fit! This is a great shot and I love the hints of classical architecture in the background.
Fabulous shot my friend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Bravissimo!V:DDD.Hugsxx Whylma
