Description

Happy Birthday my friend! That is Coit Tower (AKA Lillian Coit Memorial Tower), in Pioneer Park, in the Telegraph Hill neighborhood, of San Francisco, California. The tower is 210 feet (64 meters) high. I had been lead to believe that the tower was a memorial to the firemen that saved the city, of San Francisco, from the raging fires caused by a major earthquake, that hit at 5:12 AM, on Wednesday, April 18, 1906. Since the tower looks like the nozzle of a fire hose, I believed it. The tower was built in 1933 using Lillie Hitchcock Coit's bequest to beautify the city of San Francisco. The art deco tower, built of unpainted reinforced concrete, was designed by architects Arthur Brown, Jr. and Henry Howard, with fresco murals by 27 different on-site artists and their numerous assistants. To the left of Coit Tower is Alcatraz Island. It is located 1.5 miles (2.4 km) offshore from San Francisco, in San Francisco Bay, California, USA. It is often referred to as "The Rock," the small island was developed with facilities for a lighthouse, a military fortification, a military prison (1868), and a federal prison from 1933 until 1963. In 1972 Alcatraz became a national recreation area and received designation as a National Historic Landmark in 1986. Today, the island's facilities are managed by the National Park Service and it is open to tours. The land area on the other side of the Bay are cities like Sausalito and Tiburon. Oakland is to the right in the east Bay. This photo was taken many years ago and recently scanned. Zoom helps some. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana
