A world away from Admiral Farragut and the US Civil War we find another kind of "mobile" force...
8 May 1942... The Battle of the Coral Sea...
Out of 21 TBD Devastators from USS Lexington and USS Yorktown that launched torpedoes at the wildly-manouvring IJN carrier Shokaku NO HITS were observed. Now, short-comings with the Douglas TBD Devastator were already apparent- and became catastrophic at the Battle of Midway- but its possible on this occasion that the unreliable Mark 13 torpedoes were partly to blame.

Superb image! At first glance I thought this was the attack of the torpedo bombers at Midway, whose daring but unsuccessful attack helped make victory possible by drawing the Japanese fighter cover come down to a low level, after which our dive bombers scored key hits on the carriers.

Torpedoes! Now, it was widely know by both the Germans and the British that (oddly) the Italians had the best Torpedoes.. In fact the Germans borrowed some of their technologies and put in their own! I have no doubt that the Japanese had better ones than both the US and the UK as well.. Their Navy being far more advanced than both of ours at that time! The Devastator.. well, as you said, it was a 1930's design that had had its day.. Oddly an even older design used by the British, the Swordfish lasted till the end of the war and was better than most later designs still! Odd huh? Great work once more my friend!
