Description
I wonder, did you know that the Native American peoples have fought in all of America's wars? This country is ours to defend as well and we have been proud to do so. Granted, we did a fair job of it early on, but in fact some of us turned on our own and fought on your side during the Indian Wars. Most people don't know that.
Over 12,000 of us participated in WW I - even though we weren't yet official 'citizens', and WW II. A Native American of the Pima tribe from Arizona was one of the men who helped raise the flag at Iwo Jima. His name was Ira Hayes. There were also the Navajo Code Talkers, who were commended throughout WW II for their skill, speed and accuracy. At the Battle of Iwo Jima, Major Howard Connor, 5th Marine Division signal officer, had six Navajo code talkers working around the clock during the first two days of the battle. These six sent and received over 800 messages, all without error. Connor later stated, "Were it not for the Navajos, the Marines would never have taken Iwo Jima." We've fought in every war since then, too.
Eh, guess I'm the 'red' in this image. When you're remembering those who gave so much of themselves for freedom, include us if you would. Many thanks.

The painting shown above is called "War Shirt of the Morning Star - Pawnee" by artist Larry Fanning. It's one of my most favorite Native American paintings.
I used Angel's (Savage Dragon's) "SD Skin Lights", which she kindly sent me. Can't remember which one it was. Think it was One? I like them. I noticed they really brought out the veins and skin tones nicely. But then again, I tend to like my people to have real colored skin - unless they're one of my vampires. Then they can look like death warmed over and that's fine! Sorry if you can't really see, but I had to pare this down a lot from original size. Thank you again, Angel! Much appreciated. I'll be using them again and get in a little closer next time.
Hope you have a great 4th and if you're lucky enough to live in an area where fireworks are allowed and it's not raining buckets, watch some for me!
Cheers to you all and thanks for looking, commenting and your own awesome and inspiring art works!

wow WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY Cool Ray funny I guess it is my age group or my experiences but I have always Considered Native Americans ... Americans..lolol Hey they were here before us Irish Americans lol.. and yes I also Had a very good friend and team mate when i was in the service that was Navajo.. He served with distinction! Happy 4th :o)
What a beautiful painting! And I like your informative narrative. It seems armies always take their toll on minorities. It has been like this with the French and the Bretons. The breton bataillons were sent first in the last 3 wars we had : 1870, WW1 and WW2... And more, because of their language which has nothing in common with French, Breton people were tried and shot because the French thought they were German spies ! After 400 years of occupation, the French finally succeeded to almost eradicate our language by hardly punishing the children in school if they spoke Breton. This occured between 1900 and 1920 ! Colonization is the same everywhere: cruel!
Wonderful painting of a Native American, I'm from UK, but I always had great respect and admiration for all the Native Americans. So I love to hear anything about them, thanks
