1. Jan van Riebeeck. I have had many conversations with a handful of South Africans over the past several years, and have had that information etched into my brain. I asked one friend a question about South Africa, and he said, "The answer to your question goes back a long way, but let me give you the short version: In 1652, Jan van Riebeeck landed at the Cape ..." I thought, "The short version? Holy crap!" A year or so later, visiting with another South African friend, I was interested in his cultural experience living inland versus living on the coast. He said, "There are similarities and differences, but in order to give you a good idea of the culture, I'll need to give you some history. In 1652, Jan van Riebeeck landed at the Cape ..." !!! I know how you feel about the great age of things in Europe, though. Nothing out here is very old. The history of Seattle and Washington State is interesting, but I'll give you the short version. In 1851, the Denny party arrived at Alki Point ... LOL! Did I remember to tell you I like your picture? The thing that boggles my mind the most is that someone piled those stones one on top of the other 530 years ago, and they're still there and still function as specified.

I can give you the long version of my structure..."This house was completed and occupied by whaleman in 1993. He did many things to it." End of story.

I know this place! lol It is on the old side, Rosy and I actually managed to turn up here on one of the few open days of the year, and got the tour inside! I had never been inside before in all the years I've lived in Stamford! lol Great POV! Rob
