Description
The Coral Sea. May 7th 1942. Vice Admiral Takagi, leading the IJN's carrier strike group, must have been tearing his hair out that afternoon. Clearly carrier aviation in 1941/42 worked well if your target was in an atlas... But the light carrier Shoho had just been surprised and blown apart by American carrier aircraft and the Port Morseby invasion force had withdrawn temporarily until the defending US carrier(s) were destroyed. All he'd managed to find so far was an American fleet oiler. It didn't help that patrols were reporting American carriers everywhere. It seemed that from 10,000 feet, everything that floats is an aircraft carrier, and if it shoots at you... its a battleship!
As Takagi's two carriers Shokaku and Zuikaku could not move within range of the next American "carrier" sighting till late in the day, land-based bombers from Rabual were sent into the attack. Which is why the detached Australian-US cruiser task force, though singularly lacking in the aforementioned carriers, found itself dodging bombs and torpedos from Nells and Bettys respectively... and then dodging bombs from some passing B-17s who mistook them for the retreating invasion force. Ooops. But events were about to become more frustrating. Takagi launched a "money or nothing" late afternoon strike, guessing that the discovered Allied "covering force" had to be near the elusive carriers. He guessed wrong...

Good one! I like the low point of view in these scenes. It's a good device to show a wide array of action. Also, I really like the color contrast on the water...oranges and blues. I think it really pumps up the sense of danger. Very nice work. (By the way, excellent work on the fire, smoke, and other effects.)

First rate work on the cruisers and bombers!!! The Fletcher class destroyer USS Ross had to deal with some Betty bombers at The Battle of Leyte Gulf, the fire control officer on the number one turret hit a Betty dead on with a 5 inch shell! Most impressive recreation of the action at Coral Sea!!!
