Description
Also part of the Queen Mary bridge.
I'm no nautical expert, but I'm guessing this is what told them how far the bottom of the ocean was from the ship's hull. If you know, please confirm or correct.

outstanding post work effect.this is on a ship?
Nice work. Is that a compass or something?
I think it was mostly intended to tell how far away metallic objects were, particularly ships. Metal would provide a good return echo. Nice shot!
Great shot - postwork really gives this an antique feel. I think this is a readout for the ship's fathometer, e.g. depth gauge.
Sounding usually meant finding out how deep the bottom is. As in "Take a sounding" with a line and lead weight. According to Wikipedia: "Depth sounding, the determination of the depth of water usually in the sea. Originally using a weighted line called a lead line More recently using Echo sounding"
beautiful echo!!!
Fathometer. Your assumption is spot on.
