Description
We were on TDY (temporary deployment to Guam). Its the middle of the week and we were off duty. So we drove down to Tarague Beach and checked it out. Yours truly is in the picture doing the checking.
On a previous deployment, a few years earlier we had a picnic in this area at night. 600-ft cliffs, a strip of land with coconut palms, a white sandy beach, a coral reef and a lagoon with fish like in an aquarium, and beautiful sunsets - straight out of Michener's 'South Pacific'.
Guam is part of the Marianas, it is hot and very humid and overgrown with dense jungle.
Guam was overrun by the Japanese in 1941 and re-taken by US Forces during the Battle of Guam, 21 July to 10 August 1944.
22,000 Japanese defenders faced 36,000 US Forces. The United States lost 1,777 killed and 6,053 wounded. Four Marines were awarded the Medal of Honor for their heroic actions during this battle. The Japanese lost 18,040+ killed and 485 were taken POW.
On 24 January 1972 near Talofofo two local hunters captured Shoichi Yokoi, a sergeant in the Imperial Japanese Army. He had been hiding out for almost 28 years, living in an underground cave in the dense jungle.
We often talked among ourselves what he must have been thinking of when he saw the B-52s take off from Anderson AFB on their 4,500 miles round trip bombing missions to Vietnam.
I came through Guam the first time in June 1966, while he was still hiding out.
The dense jungle is home to feral pigs and small poisonous snakes.
This picture was taken in April 1988 and later scanned,

What a lovely beach, but where are the bikini babes lol. Great info on the island, Wonder if the Sargent ever wondered when the reinforcements were going to get there.. Home life for him must have been bad wanting to stay on there all those years, must have wondered why nobody was bombing and shooting any longer lol..
Looks like paradise, but that "hot and humid" thing keeps me in Seattle. LOL! Great image!

Great read Sig, fascinating! Lovely shot and thanks for posting it.. Also, thanks for the comment you sent me regarding U.S. Aircraft in Europe.. So confusion I think lol I meant, in our museums not seen at Air shows or bases.. But, that's fine, limited space makes you fail to put things across sometimes.. This is a fine shot, well done.. Please excuse limited posts and comments for the moment, Am away at Rosy's in the U.S. Rob
