Description
A work in progress, Lunar Escape Device.
This was a serious design for the Apollo program. Longer stays on the surface raised questions about the reliability of the LEM, and the plan was to put together something which could return 1 or 2 astronauts to lunar orbit, where the command module could collect them.

Thanks for the feedback - I was not expecting much interest in this one! To give a bit more information, the box at the top above the pilots head is the star tracker, and the two man version basically slid the pilot forwards, and the second chap would stand in stirrups behind the seat! The real challenge would be for the command module pilot who would have very little time to rendezvous, and would need top manoeuvre without using jets that would hit the lunar astronauts.
