Description

Aside from the pleasant rural scene & the bright & cheerful colors, I like this because it is not just a two dimensional painting on a flat wall: The window cuts a kind of square hole in the picture & though windows are generally thought of as things you look through, this one presents us with a reflection of something that is behind us. And there are many architectural features on this part of the building that jut out, recess in & decorate the wall. The artist just painted over these, not incorporating the features into his work, but not letting them interfere either. And, finally, I like the irony of a peaceful agricultural scene painted on a building in a large, cosmopolitan city...

I think the one problem I had with the murals in the Mission district was that nearly all were a protest of unrighteousness, despair, anger and death. They were magnificently done in the most artist, bold and creative styles, but they seemed to preach "revolt" and revolution to the point where no matter when I turned I was looking in to teary eye, clenched fists and ravished living conditions. This is not only a bright and hopeful mural, but you got a great slice of it with plenty of message still in the rich, bold paint. Excellent capture. I may have to post a few of my shots... hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

MrsLubner: Yes, you're right, many of the Mission murals are political, revolutionary & violent, in the tradition of Diego Rivera, Orozco, Siqueiros & other famous Mexican muralists. Though even they also painted hopeful, optimistic & life-affirming works that depicted a post-revolutionary world.

The mural (which I like very much) is beautifully done, and your photography is outstanding! I bet you know, though, that I zoomed in really big so I could see all the architectural details through the paint. LOL! Beautiful decorative trim on the walls, and the asymetrical windowpanes are a delight. All in all, a superb image with more than one level of interest. Well seen, and well done!
