Now for something completely different...
Early July 1937, east of New Guinea, Vought O3U Corsair "4-0-4" from the battleship USS Colorado searches in vain for any trace of Amelia Earhart's missing Lockheed L10 Electra.
Visibility was apparently excellent- it was the maps that were the problem! The Colorado's three Corsairs spent the first day looking for two reefs that apparently didn't exist... Or did they? (cue: Twilight Zone soundtrack...)
At dusk, the Colorado prudently changed course away from the charted locations lest it "confirm" the location of either of the wayward reefs the absolutely wrong way... in the dark!!!
