Description
Good evening!
This here is the so called "Blue Wonder", an old iron bridge between the Dresden suburbs Loschwitz and Blasewitz (over there.
Loschwitz and Blasewitz grew up in the late 19th century and the authorities of the city decided to build a bridge between both surburbs. This was in 1893 and the new bridge got the name "King-Albrecht-Bridge" till 1912. The Dresden inhabitants called it "The Blue Wonder" from the blue color of it`s construction.
One week before the opening in 1893 the first electric tram opened its service and from the first day the bridge was used by this very modern transportation system.
Some statistics:
Leading constructor was Claus Kloepcke;
Manufactory: Koenigin-Marien-Hütte, an iron mining and construction company in Zwickau, Saxony.
Construction weight: 3500 tons
Widest range: 149 meters.
Price: 2,25 Mio Goldmark.
Travellers had to pay a tax:
Motordriven cars: 20 Pennies
Horsedriven cars: 10 Pennies
Pedestrians, tram: 2 Pennies
In 1935 the bridge was upgraded, the pedestrian ways are now outside the pillars to get more room for the traffic.
Today the bridge is hot beloved by the people of Dresden and is a famous landmark. In early times there were many protests: "Ugly, to heavy, not elegant - Why didn`t you built a hanging bridge?" In 1935 existed plans to destroy the bridge completely....
The bridge wasn`t destroyed in WW II, and very engaged people prevented the destruction by german pioneer troopers in the last moments of war. This declares the great love of Dresden´s inhabitants to their bridge.....
I hope you liked this story. Thanks for your comments for my last pic and a special THANKS to these who took it as their favorites. Please feel free to send some new, they are always appreciated.
Bye and enjoy, billcody
