...And be sure your tray tables are in their upright position?
Sorry about the over-used joke there. This was really just a quick-test for myself. I wanted to toss myself another 30-minute project to see how I could do at it. This actually came in at 40 minutes, so I still have some learning to do, where efficiency is concerned.
The background was a simple render in bryce, using one of the sky presets, which I flipped over during my postworking/compositing stage. The lander was also rendered in Bryce, using a model I'd previously made so it's more like "Slap it there, render now!" rather than any new modeling work. The fires of the re-entry were done in Photoshop, taking elements from my (getting frighteningly large) collection of cloud photos.
Over-all, I'm kind of liking it, and I can see how I'll be able to use these techniques more effectively in the future.
Thanks for taking a look, and since this was meant primarily as a learning exercise, I'd really appreciate any constructive criticisms, critiques, or suggestions you guys have. I've already learned alot from suggestions in the past, so even if I don't seem to respond, I really do listen and consider everyone's input.
Have a good evening folks!

Nicely done for 40 minutes work...like the fire effects and overall scene!
Cool! I think your use of Photoshoped clouds for the reentry flames really adds to the image.
PRETTY COOL
wonderful looking
Fantastic! The fire effects are awesome! Corrie
Hmm...not bad at all for 40 minutes I sez! The only thing I can suggest is study re-entry images. nasa or jpl has to have a bunch of stuff like that I'm sure. I'd really not like landing anywhere in that tin can, that's gotta be hard on the spine!
Outstanding. That's the only word I can use to describe this image. What a re-entry shot it is.
great concept ! wonderful composition...not SciFi actually !!!
You can be proud, making this in 40 minutes, I find it really good! The only detail that I would criticize is the background, with those clouds looking a bit flat. But I don't know Bryce, so I can't say what it can do...
great work
Outstanding work in just 40 minutes!!! Wonderful re-entry scene!!
Reentry is always the most stressful time of any space trip....Very cool work here,Mike. Happy holidays to you and your family.
Well, it looks pretty darn good to me for 40 minutes' work, Mike! It takes me 40 minutes to just figure out which sky to use! LOL!
Fantastic work.
Counting down. All functions nominal. All functions optimal. Counting down. The center holds. The falcon hears the falconer. Infrastructure, check. Wetware, check. Everyone hang on to the life bar, please... Okay, I couldn't resist quoting one of the basestar hybrids from my much-beloved Battlestar Galactica. In this case, the hybrid featured in the DVD-special "The Plan." I heard her voice when I read your title. Now, as for the image: WOW! This is one of those nicely magnificent and dramatic works that only space (as a genre) can provide. Your work on this is astounding, especially as it only too 40 minutes to complete! It takes me 40 minutes just to decide whether or not I want to work on an image! I love the details in this and the superb sense of drama. This is outstanding.
Minutes before crash..., cool work
I'm having a hard time seeing anything here that doesn't appear true....Your effects ratio over angle degree plus the special effects look correct from where I'm sitting....(smiles)....Awesome Imagery!
