Description
In the previous scene, Danny Barton, the boy on the ground, was about to snatch a slice of pizza from Carley Green, the lady nearest to him in this scene. In this scene, Danny has snatched the pizza from Carley and run off down the street. Her boyfriend, Harold Wheeler, now standing over the boy with his foot planted firmly on his back, chased after Danny and caught him before he could escape. Fortunately, Danny did manage to choke the entire slice down before Harold tackled him and dragged him back to the Pizza Palace.
Here, in this scene, we see most of the people that witnessed the crime standing around Danny. Even Slo Joe Stanton, the owner of the Pizza Palace came out to investigate, along with his best customer, Frank Dunwiddy, the guy in the gray suit and light gray tie. Two other customers, George Carpenter, the guy in the light green shirt near Carley Green, and his girlfriend, Julie Fenton, the girl in the orange dress still sitting at their table, are also interested in the outcome of this escapade.
Danny is kicking and thrashing on the pavement trying to escape from Harold's foot which is currently pressing him down into the pavement. George is ready to grab Danny in case he does get away from Harold. Carley is trying to reason with everyone and get to the truth of why Danny thought he could steal a piece of her pizza.
Danny finally stops screaming long enough to calm down a little and listen to reason. Once he catches his breath, he tells his story. He comes from a very poor family in another town. His parents both lost their jobs and the father left in search of another job. The mother tried to keep food on the table by turning tricks. Some of her 'boyfriends' were very abusive and were beating up the kids. Danny got badly beaten one night and decided to run away. That was about two weeks ago. He hitched a ride to this city and has been living out of garbage cans and any other source he can find free food just to survive.
Slo Joe, after hearing the story, takes pity on the kid and asks Danny if he would like to try working for him. He warns him he can't pay him much, but he has a spare room in his apartment above the business and the kid won't starve.
Carley, after hearing Danny's story, takes pity on him as well and offers to share the rest of hers and Harold's pizza with him.
George takes his foot off Danny and helps him to his feet and suggests that if Danny has good manners, he will apologize to Carley for stealing her slice of pizza. Danny gets a big smile on his face now and very promtly tells Carley he is sorry and asks for her forgiveness, which she gives to him.
Everyone takes heart in the way the night turned out. A poor street urchin has found a means of survival and been taken off the street. Slo Joe, in a most magnanimous gesture, breaks out one of his best bottles of wine and pours a round for everyone, except Danny, of course. Can't be contributing to juvenile delinquency now, can he?
