Description

Journal entry - 16 December 1987 They say God rewards the righteous. My reward for last night? I have the extreme privilege of traveling from Medan to Prapat aboard C.V. Bintang Utara's "express" Mercedes bus. "Express" is a word used to describe a bus that takes the long way around and stops at every pothole to pickup extra passengers. Anyway, after five hours, including a stop so the driver can have lunch, we roll into Prapat. The bus drops us off in front of 'David's Chip Accommodations and Travel Service' (misspelled 'cheap' but 'accommodations', no problem) where I book a hotel room at the Duma Sari. A quick ride to the lake and then an hour and a half wait until the ferry leaves. I land at Little Tuk Tuk and the Duma Sari around 4:30 p.m. The Duma Sari is one of those new, nondescript hotels, but it does have its comforts. Spotlessly clean, full western bath (hot water two hours in the morning and two hours at night), soft bed, mosquito netting over all openings, breakfast included with the lake view for USD $14 per day. Not bad. Its 10 p.m. and so to bed.

Well, in my country all the buses are "express". I fully understand what you felt. When you step on one, all you can do to keep from going crazy is to enjoy as part of your encounter with the folklore. Cool landscape.

Such a trip is not for "wimps". You are a "hard guy". Respect, you globetrotter!! Beautiful horizon!

It feels so good to travel per armchair and experience it all over again - or so it seems? thanks to your vivid journal description - especially as I have faced similar situations, like yourself also in the late 80's. Amazing memories, Mark BB
