Description
Tramea anusta.
I found it very challenging to photograph the Red Saddlebags because they like to sit up high, so the views were almost always against the sky. Not a good way to get a good picture. On this occasion, I had set up a chair and a tripod, and had my 650-1300mm lens ready, when this pair, in copula, flew in and settled on this twig. They sat there for a very long time, about 20 feet away. I find it interesting that dragonflies have a number of different ways of joining, but in each case, both are facing in the same direction, and they can fly together. In fact, some species join, and then she dips repeatedly into the water as they fly, laying an egg each time. The male also drops down with her, so she can do that.
