Description
Got this image of the reproduction of the Star Spangled Banner raised as the British fleet withdrew. It is flying over Fort McHenry and is framed by rigging and gear from the SS JOHN W. BROWN.
The title refers to several events. The most obvious is today is the 10th anniversary of the latest sneak attack perpetrated against the United States. (At least the other sneak attackers had the decency to wear the uniforms of their country and cause.)
Another anniversary is the fact that the BROWN was launched, not far from this spot, on Labor Day, 1942.
Other anniversaries, often overlooked, are the bombardment of Fort McHenry itself: September 13-14 1814. Them we have the Battle of North Point, the previous day (12 September 1814). The loss of British General Ross during the delaying action had repercussions on the forthcoming battle for Baltimore... His second-in-command realized that the fleet had to get past Fort McHenry to support the army's main attack. It didn't, they didn't, and, eventually, we ended up with a unsingable British drinking song as our national anthem.
Something poetic in that final bit if you ask me.
Maybe that has something to do with the inevitable drinking contests when Britishers and Yanks get together socially.
(That may have been a better alternative to war in 1812. Nah, that would have led to probably more violence.)
Keep hunting.
Thanks for looking.
