Description

With the Netherlands East Indies in flames, the Dutch Naval Aviation Service Do24K prototype X-1 escaped overnight to Broome in north-western Australia, arriving at around 8:30am on the morning of March 3rd, 1942. An hour later, the Zeroes pounced! In moments, all fifteen flying boats staging at Broome on their way south were destroyed. It is believed that around 80 people perished- in the haste to evacuate Java, accurate passenger lists weren't available. The present-day extent of the flying boat graveyard at Broome is uncertain. Six corroded wrecks are visible on the mud flat offshore, but only four of these have been conclusively identified, three Dutch machines, Dornier X-1 and X-23, and Catalina Y-59 plus an RAF Catalina (FV-N). Two Catalina wrecks remain unidentified (they could be Dutch, British or American). Another 5 Catalinas, 3 more Dorniers and the two Short Empire flying boats must lie somewhere in the deeper water nearby. My Do24 and Short C-class models rendered in Vue 8 Esprit. The Catalina model is from Poserworks (avail. from CP). I've given the Cats a new US and an RAF texture. Thanks for viewing...
