Description
Catedral de Sao Sebastiao do Rio de Janeiro, or Catedral Metropolitana is the seat of the archbishop of Rio de Janeiro. It is located in the center of the city on Av. Republica do Chile. It was built between 1964 and 1970 and replaced a series of old churches that had served as cathedrals since 1676.
The conical structure has a base diameter of 96m (315-ft) and an overall height of 75m (296-ft). It has four rectilinear stained glass windows that soar 64m (210-ft) from floor to ceiling.
The cathedral has a standing room capacity of 20,000 people.
