Description
The Glen Canyon Dam is a concrete thick arch-gravity dam, 710 feet (220 meters) high, 1,560 feet (480 meters) wide at the top and 300 feet (91 meters) wide at the base. It was built on the Colorado River in northern Arizona in the United States, just north of Page. The discharge from the dam heads west into the Grand Canyon. The dam was built to provide hydroelectricity and flow regulation from the upper Colorado River Basin to the lower. The dam is named for Glen Canyon, a colorful series of gorges most of which now lies under the reservoir. Construction of Glen Canyon Dam started in 1956 and was not finished until 1966. The reservoir, created by this dam, is called Lake Powell, and is the second largest artificial lake in the country, extending upriver well into Utah. It can store 24,322,000 acre feet (30 km³) of water when full. Lake Powell is 186 miles (299 km) long and 25 miles (40 km) wide. The reservoir is named for explorer John Wesley Powell, a one-armed American Civil War veteran who explored the river via three wooden boats in 1869. Some info from Wikipedia. 1996 photo scanned. Zoom is the same size.

Amazing shot Dana, fantastic lighting and POV! Well done!
My sister and I were just talking about Glen Canyon and Lake Powell. Another place we both want to see. Great shot of this massive structure!!
Pretty impressive dam Dana. I've not seen this one before. And 710 feet down is a long way and makes me recall that's almost as deep as one area of Okanagan Lake but it is easier to understand the depth looking down the right side of your photo than the left side.
Surprise surprise Dana, We stood in each others footsteps! I took a shot of this in May and its almost identical to yours except yours is the better.
very impressive shot and place !!! the cars look really small !! excellent done!!
So interesting! A really splendid photo. I always find dams a bit unsettling, maybe it's the scale.
