Ipanema Beach in the foreground, and Leblon Beach in the distance, on a mid-morning Sunday. Both, Ipanema and Leblon, are upscale neighborhoods, but the developments creeping up the hillsides are favelas, slums, the source of much of the crime that plagues Rio.
