Description
Last June I visited the Environmental Nature Center in Newport Beach, California. It is privately funded and features a building with exhibits and information on Southern California flora and fauna as well as the Native Americans that lived in the area. There is also a small gift shop where you can purchase some excellent wildflower honey.
Outside, the grounds have been landscaped with plants native to Southern California. This is the Coulter's Matilija Poppy, also known as Romneya coulteri. It holds the record for having the largest flowers of any plant native to California. Each flower spreads out like an egg cracked into a frying pan. The six crinkled white petals surround the sunny-side-up yellow center of multiple stamens. All well and good but it looked like a Tam O’Shanter to me, or perhaps a Spanish dancer.

So THAT'S where it comes from! I'd forgotten that. We call the Poached Egg plant or Tree Poppy, and it gets easily cut back by cold here. I have the remains of one, we shall see whether it flowers this year.

In the State Park, they have some by the desert display and they are called Desert Poppies. :-) Must be a local thing. I love them. They are huge and the only down side is that the bees love them even more than I do! Here comes the Bee Dance....! LOL Marvelous shot!

Yes, I can see the hat, but more, I see the dancer. Skirts billowing in response to her movement. Beautiful light and shadows, and wonderful crisp color. I like the lovely golden of the stamen and their shadows on the petals. The background is beautiful and shows up the flower wonderfully. Excellent work!
