Description

The third prototype Dornier 24 was built in 1937 in Germany and pressed into service as "X-1" for the Marine Luchtvaart Dienst (MLD, the Royal Netherlands Navy Aviation Service) in the Netherlands East Indies (NEI). Aside from two prototypes, I think the production variant produced for the MLD were mostly Do24K-1s. This image presents the X-1 in flight. The black-bordered orange triangle insignia was adopted by the Netherlands in 1939 to emphasise their neutrality following the outbreak of war in Europe. Photos of the X-1 that I've found on the web show it sporting its peacetime tricolour roundels. These photos also show that MLD Do24's midships turret was not as spacious as that typical of later wartime versions. I've painted over the older "pie chart" roundel on the model texture and applied the orange triangle insignia. As near as I can tell, this is what the X-1 looked like at the time of its last flight- a night-time refugee-run from Java to Australia on March 2nd 1942. X-1 was destroyed the following morning by strafing Japanese Zeroes while refueling in Roebuck Bay in the north of Western Australia- along with 14 other Allied flying boats (these were mostly other MLD Dorniers and Catalinas, but also a handful of British and US Catalinas, and two Australian Short C-class machines). Rendered in Vue 8 Esprit. I modelled the Do 24 in Shade 10.5. Now I have models of all the flying boat types present at "The Battle of Broome"- next step is to try depicting the sad event itself.
