On 1 Sept 1940, over Kenley airfield, Oblt. Josef Buerschgens (7th Staffel/JG 26) found himself on the tail of a Spitfire that was on the tail of a Bf-110. Buerschgens fired a burst, and hit the Spitfire, which broke off, smoking. Buerschgens Me-109, which was now closing rapidly on the 110, was mistaken for another Spitfire by the rear gunner, who fired at it as it turned away. The engine, hit, immediately stopped. Buerschgens feathered the prop, and leaving the battle area alone, attempted to make the Channel. Instead, he crashed near Rye, England and spent the duration of the war a guest of the British government. I chose to depict that moment, when alone in the sky, Oblt.
