Description
Arlington National Cemetery, in Arlington, Virginia, across the Potomac River from Washington, DC. This is just a tiny section of our National Cemetery where 281,771 of this nations heroes are buried. There are 2 US Presidents, 19 astronauts and 62 Foreign Nationals buried here including 24 British veterans and 1 Australian veteran. The Potomac River, in the background, separates Virginia and Washington, DC. If you look carefully, you can see a white domed building, on the left, which is President Thomas Jeffersons memorial. Photo taken in the spring of 1983 and scanned. Zoom is a must!

WONDERFUL SHOT
This is--most definitely--food for thought. There's a beautiful starkness to this image that I find really effective. I can't say that I like war and warfare, but I find the principles behind it to be oddly telling. I remember hearing former Soviet submarine crews talking to their Western counterparts, and the real measure of fraternity between them was amazing; it's like they were best friends with missiles pointed at each other. One of the old post-Soviets pointed out that the leaders of countries are probably the worse things for those countries, since they're not the ones who come face to face with raw, naked, and often really scary humanity, but they are the ones who declare war. He said that if leaders did that, then war would still exist but there would be fewer of them. I thought of that when I saw this shot and I have to say that I love it when an image triggers a whole, complex, line of thoughts. This is quite a moving shot.
