Description

The Peacock's Eye Vanessa or me (I Inachis LINNAEUS, 1758) is a well-known and colorful butterfly family Nymphalidae, an inhabitant of the temperate zones of Europe and Asia. It is the only species of the genus Inachis by some authors considered synonymous with Nymphalis. Its specific epithet refers to Io, a priestess of Juno's legendary beauty. It has a wingspan of up to 60-70 mm. The dorsal surface of the wings is red brick with tending to brown edges. The four corners are adorned with colorful eye-catching spots to the eye. These spots, called ocelli, have a protective function against predators [1]. The ventral surface is instead of a blackish-brown color that makes it easier to camouflage.
