Description

Thanks for your comments... Here I've returned to what must pass as a "creation myth" for the H8K Emily (if we don't count the ineffectual second Pearl Harbour attack)... that's the nocturnal sparring with Airacobras over Townsville in mid-1942. An occassion to try some more tracers and some volumetric "searchlights" in Vue. On the last nights of July 1942, three months after the Battle of the Coral Sea, pairs of Imperial Japanese Naval Air Force H8K1 Emily flying boats from Rabual probed the defences of Townsville in Northern Australia. On the final mission, one Emily had mechanical difficulties and had to turn back enroute, so only one behemoth arrived over Cleveland Bay that night in the wee small hours. Assisted by a radar alert, searchlights and the moon, two waiting USAAF Bell P39 Airacobras closed in. The flying boat's crew jettisoned their bombs into a mudflat as the dogfight began, but one bomb appears to have hung on during the aerobatics- eventually separating and exploding in a coconut grove. Incredibly, there is, or at least there was, a plaque there commemorating that bomb impact and the raid. The pilots in the two Airacobras drew a bead on the big Emily, apparently scoring hits and according to some accounts used all their ammo on it before it left the area. That was apparently one of the "weak" early production versions ones. To be fair, the Airacobras and their pilots were not nightfighters (mind you the Japanese crew believed they'd been attacked by two Hurricanes!) Once again, thanks for your encouragement!

Wow Brian! brilliant image and fascinating bit of history...lighting is excellent, everything is there if you look carefully as it should be at night. The tracer is marvelous (I've never managed that). The Airacobras using up all their ammo gave me a vision of the Japanese crew using that line from '300'.."is that all you've got"? :-) Very cool image, Bravo Sir!
