Description
The western lowland gorilla is a subspecies of the western gorilla. They live in forests and lowland swamps in Angola, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon. It is the gorilla usually found in most zoos. Adult male Gorillas are prone to a degenerative heart disease. Babec, a western lowland gorilla, on exhibit, at the Birmingham Zoo, in Birmingham, Alabama, USA, was the first gorilla to receive an artificial pacemaker. The western lowland gorilla is the smallest subspecies of gorilla. A male can stand fully erect at 5 foot 7 inches (1.7 meters) tall and weigh almost 400 pounds (180 kg). It is estimated that a lowland gorilla, in his prime, has the physical strength of 7 - 8 Olympic weight lifters. Info from Wikipedia.
This photo was taken at the Miami Zoo. The window is designed, so that children, can go into a cave like structure, and look out on him. He is basically blocking their view. Zoom works.
